Obituary of Grace Irene Goodwin-Rector

NEW GLASGOW – Grace Irene Goodwin-Rector, 76, Stellarton, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away Friday, May 21, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her loving family. Born February 20, 1934 in New Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Arthur J. and M. Beulah (Sangster) Webber. She received her early education in New Harbour before moving to New Glasgow in 1951. She was employed with the former Metropolitan Store and Maritime Tel & Tel, New Glasgow prior to her first marriage. Diagnosed with cancer in 1972, she followed the advice of her physician and re-entered the work force, and was employed with Varner’s Fabrics, K-Mart and Sure Stitch until retirement in 1994. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church “The Kirk”, New Glasgow. Grace was an accomplished seamstress and a prize winning baker. She was a caring and nurturing person, who touched the lives of everyone around her. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy. She rejoiced at each and every achievement they made throughout their lives. She saw the good in everyone and was quick to champion those in need. She made time for everyone and will be remembered by the children in the Washington Street area to whom she was a “second mom”. Grace was an avid painter, gardener, knitter and baker. She will be remembered for her fancy desserts and wedding cakes. She was a member of Golden Link Rebekah Lodge No. 2, New Glasgow and the 55 Plus Club, where she enjoyed participating in many activities including, playing cards and painting classes. She will be remembered for many things, but love of her family was always foremost. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were “the light” of Nannie Grace’s life. Surviving are her second husband, Robert William “Bill” Rector; daughters, Susan (Craig) Gallant, Halifax; Melody Board (Kevin Fraser), New Glasgow; Laurel Goodwin (Bernie MacDonald), New Glasgow; Rhona (Ken) Hubley, Salem; sons, Andy (Janet), MacLellan’s Brook; Dave (Trina), Westville; Michael (Alisha), Cold Lake, Alta.; Peter (Lori), New Glasgow; grandchildren, Robbie, Kenny, Krista, Jeffrey, Jacqueline, Amanda, Grace, Jasmin, Selena, Jacob, Joel and Jace Goodwin; Haileigh and Zachary Board; Donald and Roy Hubley; great-grandchildren, Courtney, Logan, Cole, Colbey, Brooke, Megan, Kaleb, Madison, Zoe and Cohen; sister, Geneva Murphy; sister-in-law, Rose Webber; several nieces and nephews; Bill’s children, Marlene (Randy) Mason, Stellarton; Judy (Ivan) Richard, Plymouth; Lois Dunbar, New Glasgow; Karen (Kenny) Barkhouse, Granton; Debbie Rector, Priestville; Chrissie (Michael) Brandt, Stellarton; Bill Jr. (Bernadette), Priestville; Ronnie, Stellarton; grandchildren, Jamie Mason, Shari Easthope, Steve Dunbar; Brad, Joey and Timmy Richards; Joe Brandt; Kris and Kim Barkhouse; Allen Rector; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Shea, Connor, Ainslie, Sharee, Austin, Anthony, Arwin, Katie, Haileigh and Jake. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Thomas Goodwin; sisters, Katherine “Kay” MacDonald and Ola Coates; brother, Sidney “Bud” Webber. The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 25th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 26th in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Sand officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Golden Link Rebekah Lodge No. 2, New Glasgow will hold their service 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25th in the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Grace’s memory to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
