Obituary of Carolyn Barbara MacKay

THE PONDS – Carolyn Barbara (Chapman) MacKay, 72, Westville Road, formerly of The Ponds, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 5, 2021, at home, surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Allison Borden and Barbara Henderson (Potter) Chapman. Carolyn trained at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax and worked as a C.N.A. until she married the love of her life, Lawrence. She resided in The Ponds until four years ago. Carolyn was a homemaker for 13 years before returning to work as an Educational Assistant for CCRSB. She thoroughly enjoyed her job, working over 25 years with special needs children. She formed a bond with all the children and they with her. While working at Frank H. MacDonald Elementary School, Carolyn spearheaded the annual IWK fundraiser, raising thousands of dollars for the Telethon. Carolyn was a founding member for the first Beaver group in Lismore. She belonged to the Merigomish and District Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Shore Road Bowlers and Lismore Sunrisers Softball team. After retirement, Carolyn took up volunteer work helping with many groups, such as, Meals on Wheels, the homeless shelter, Salvation Army kettle campaign, Shepherds Lunchroom, Lismore Wintertime Review, and served on the board of the directors for the Lismore Community Center. She was a member and Elder of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish, and the Sir Frederick Banting Chapter I.O.D.E, New Glasgow. Carolyn loved to laugh and caused others to do so, as was seen yearly in her performances with the cast of the Lismore Wintertime Revue. Her antics were pure entertainment. Carolyn will be remembered for her love of family, her kind heart and sense of humor. Surviving are her son, Michael (Erin) and their children, Brooke and Emmett, Dartmouth; daughter, Michelle (Joanasie) and their children, Johnathan, Luc and Robbie, Iqaluit, NU.; sisters, Alison Arsenault, Pictou; Virginia “Ginny” (Donnie) Boudreau, Amherst Head; brother, Borden Chapman, Dartmouth; half-sister, Barbara Hanright, Moncton; step-sister, Kathy (Gary) Purdy, Lawrencetown; many nieces and nephews.
