Obituary of L. Gary Williams
BARNEY’S RIVER – L. Gary Williams, 62, Barney’s River, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at home.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the eldest son of Lawrence and Dorothy (Murdock) Williams, Barney’s River. He attended Barney’s River Station School and the former East Pictou Rural High School. He obtained his electrical trade from the former Nova Scotia Institute of Technology and was employed with the former C. E. McCarthy Electrical Limited. In 1974, Gary and his brother, Cameron, formed C. & G. Williams Bulldozing. In 1978, joined by brother, Eric, they acquired Williams Bros. Ltd. and Mill River Trucking, creating a successful business operation, in which he was actively involved until his death. He was a member of Barney’s River Presbyterian Church, Kenzieville, where he served on the Board of Managers. Gary was a member of Hudson Lodge No. 77, A.F. & A.M., Thorburn and U.C.T. Pictonian Council No. 879, New Glasgow. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Forest Products Association, Maritime Lumber Bureau, Maritime Quarter Horse Association and a life member of the American Quarter Horse Association. Gary shared an enthusiasm for horses with his wife, Janice, whom he proudly supported on the Quarter Horse Show circuit. His extended horse show family will fondly remember a generous spirit, affable personality and willingness to help. These attributes will form Gary’s enduring legacy along with his hearty and infectious laugh, passion for life and love of family.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 29 years, Janice (Ross); parents, Lawrence and Dot; brothers, Eric (Jean), Cameron (Colene), Barney’s River; sisters, Wendy (Robert) Ross, Barney’s River; Shelley (Lawrence) MacDonald, Avondale; mother-in-law, Gertrude Ross, High Crest Place, New Glasgow; family friend, Dorothy Dixon, Piedmont; brothers-in-law, Jack (Anita) Ross, Greenhill; Bill Ross, Piedmont; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Cameron, Thorburn; Cathy Cameron, Garden of Eden; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; his faithful dog, Sage.
The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 9th and, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 10th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 11th in First Presbyterian Church, 208 MacLean Street, New Glasgow with Rev. Larry Welch officiating. Private interment will be in Glen Bard Cemetery. Hudson Lodge Masonic service will be held 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
